The Oasel Room
My grandmother loved to talk to her husband's grandmother who was a Cherokee Indian. She told her the story of her friend Oasel who left on the Trail of Tears. She said she was a beautiful Cherokee princess and she did not know what happened to her but she missed her greatly. My grandmother named her eldest daughter in honor of this friend. My Aunt Oasel was a spunky farmer’s wife. They had a dairy across the road and many a happy time was spent playing in the barn, feed bin, hayloft and drinking fresh milk. She and I enjoyed tomato sandwiches and she made the best “meatloaf in the world”. She had a quiet strength and taught me that you should do what you feel is important to you. But you don’t need to go crowing like a rooster about it.
